Benefits of CrossFit for runners

The explosion in popularity of CrossFit has been nothing short of spectacular.  In 2005, there were only 13 CrossFit gyms located around the world. Today, there are more than 5000 with hundreds and hundreds of new CrossFit gyms opening up all the time.  At the same time, CrossFit has had a tendency to attract a certain kind of fitness enthusiast and athlete – those that are looking to take their athletic abilities to the extreme and those that are willing to work harder than most anyone else to do so.

Runners usually are pretty content to stick to their own “running bubble”, but more and more runners are starting to recognize all of the different advantages that cross training with CrossFit has on their ability to run further distances more effectively and efficiently.  If you are still on the fence about whether or not CrossFit training is right for you as a runner hopefully you’ll be able to take advantage of the insider information contained in this article to better understand the benefits of Crossfit.

CrossFit helps you build stronger muscles and improves your endurance - CrossFit is known as one of the most intense and compacted exercise programs around while also remaining incredibly flexible and adaptable – which is always going to trigger a tremendous amount of activity in your muscles and force your body to build up its endurance.  More muscle mass (of the slow and fast twitch variety) are going to allow you to accelerate much faster, allow you to reach higher top-end speeds, and allow you to maintain those top speeds over longer distances. CrossFit will help you shed extra fat and improve your speed - Another significant benefit that you are going to be able to enjoy as a runner is the ability to elevate your metabolism on a 24/7 basis through the body weight and weight training protocols CrossFit demands, allowing you to become a fat burning furnace.  Aerobic exercise (like running) is going to burn a considerable amount of fat while you are exercising, but anaerobic exercise (like CrossFit) is going to continue to burn and melt fat on a nonstop basis in order to repair and replenish your body after you have worked out.  A leaner body is a faster body, for sure.

CrossFit training will significantly boost your mobility, your flexibility, and your agility – critical core strengths for runners - Of course, CrossFit training is also going to take your mobility and your flexibility very seriously – and all of that is going to combine to make you a more complete runner, especially if you are looking to run on uneven terrain.  Think of your legs and your core as your body’s suspension system. You want it to be as flexible as possible to absorb impact without damage, but you also want it to be able to withstand a tremendous amount of pressure without popping.
